Open BlueDragon Steering Committee Interview with Sean Corfield and our open source Digital Media and Web Content Management System

And another well done interview by Alan Williamson on members of the Steering Committee. This time it hit Sean Corfield. We especially like this part of his interview where he was asked his opinion on CFML, open source and the community;

“The CFML community is definitely getting better in this area but open source is still a very new concept for the vast majority of them. Many developers have released code in source form but for the most part those offerings have not really been “open source” – no way to build a community, no clear licensing, no public bug tracking, no contribution path for the users. As an active participant in the development of several frameworks, I’ve seen developers out there who think “open source” either means that the core project should accept any and all changes the developer wants or that the code is just put out there to take and modify – fork – and use without giving anything back. Open source is a two-way street.”

We feel the same way and thus are giving back the first Enterprise Digital Asset Management with an integrated Web Content Management System as open source to the community (we already announced this earlier).

Just as Sean mentioned above we are going to go the full open source route. That means everybody will enjoy the following benefits;

  • License: The system will be released under the APGL. Organizations that wish to integrate the system under a commercial license will have the option to do so (dual licensing).
  • Bug Tracking System: There is and will be a public Bug/Feature Tracking System
  • Community: We will try our best to build a strong community around the product. The starting point will be our website (website for the product will come soon) where we will host forums, documentation and much more.
  • Support: For peace of mind organizations will have the possibility to buy support plans from SixSigns. The organizations also will have access to the product which is tested and supported by SixSigns. The community will have direct access trough forums to our developers and management team.
  • Contribution: A Enterprise system got to have a steering committee behind such a product. Thus all code releases will be checked and supported by the committee. Developers who wish to contribute to the system can download the source from our subversion system and individuals will have the option to commit code back to the source code. A fine laid out plan for contribution will be provided at a later stage.

VMWare Fusion is available

VMware released the final 1.0 version of VMware Fusion today. Fusion is a virtualization software which allows Intel-based Macs to run Windows, Linux or other PC operating systems.

We have been a convert of Parallels Desktop and we are very happy with Fusion. Much faster, feels snappier and it opens up the whole VMWare application market to the Mac world.
