Razuna updates coming your way

In the last couple of weeks we have made some major improvement to Razuna, both to the Razuna Hosted Platform, the Razuna Cloud Servers and of course to the Open Source version. Let us outline some of the major changes;

Folder & Collection RSS, Excel and Word view

Getting notified when new items arrive in a folder or collection is important, both for us and for your team. Now, there is a convenient way to stay up-to-date, that is you can subscribe to each folder/collection by RSS. This allows you to add the RSS feed to your browser (Firefox Live Bookmark, Google Reader, etc) and you will get automatically notified of updates. Additionally, you have the option to view the content of the folder/collection in Excel or in Word (with preview images).

Oh and before we forget, these options are also available for shared folders and collections!

Icon changes

Creating a user interface for an application like Razuna is never an easy task. On one hand, we want to keep it intuitive and not cluttered with “features” but on the other hand, one still needs to make those “features” available. Recently we have overhauled the folder views slightly and recently added icon changes.

The top bar shows now the most used actions in (hopefully) descriptive icons. Additionally the new “view” icons haven been added and we rearranged them a bit to group them. In other words, selecting all assets, reloading a folder and adding a folder should now be more then obvious.

Razuna has the option to show your assets in the thumbnail view (by default), in a list view or in a “combined” one which allows batch editing of filename, description and keywords. In our testing we found out that most users did not even know that, despite using them. Thus, we are now showing the different view options in a prominent place.

Improved error handling

Yes, bugs and errors are inconvenient. While we try to bring you a hassle free experience with your Digital Asset Management, it always can happen that something goes wrong. But now with the new error handling your experience with those pesky errors has just improved. Instead of a big error message, you will only receive a notification that there has been an error. In the back we are saving the error to a database and you or your administration are then able to view them and even send them directly to our tracking system over at http://issues.razuna.com.

Speed, Speed, Speed

In the recent releases we have always improved performance for your Digital Asset Management. Recently, we made some major code changes in loading and showing previews on the Razuna Hosted Platform and for those customers who are running Razuna with Amazon S3, Nirvanix or Eucalyptus.

Now, we made further changes and recently added database caching to it as well. With database caching we could improve performance by 30% and are now seeing load times for large folders with 1000 or more asets in the millisecond range. Of course, your results might be different due to connections, location, bandwidth, etc. But rest assured that from an application level we are doing application caching, database caching and are trimming just about every bit of code for performance.

Phantom assets

In a recent update, we introduced a placeholder text for assets which are in the progress of adding to the system. But sometimes, it could happen that due to circumstances the asset could not be properly added to the system. Thus you were left with the placeholder text in your folder listing with no way to remove it. Now, this is possible. You will see when you have added the asset and be able to remove the record.

Import / Export with SQL script

In Razuna 1.4 we introduced the option to Import and Export your records in the XML format. Since XML might be to verbose for a simple import to another Razuna instance we added the option to export to a SQL script file. This gives you the freedom to import within Razuna’s own import function or pass the script on to your database administrator.

Adding RAW image support

More and more Photographers are using Razuna to manage their library. Many of them use the RAW format for their photos. With the latest updates we added the RAW format in order for Razuna to read and write the metadata and create thumbnails.

When are these new features available?

These new features are already available for our customers on the Razuna Hosted Platform. Our Razuna Cloud Server customers will see them in the coming days. Those with a self hosted version will see them in the Christmas Edition of Razuna (that will be 1.4.1 or more) :-)

We are already working to bring you even more before the year ends. As always we are always happy to receive any comments or feedback.

Razuna.com and Razuna.org re-designed

We are proud that today (well yesterday) we put up the re-design of our websites at http://razuna.com and http://razuna.org. With over 30000 downloads of Razuna and with a growing customer and community base, we thought it was time for a change. We think that the new design reflects our growth and gives room for expansion.

Just as before, we are making the .com domain available for our Razuna Hosted Platform and the newly announced Razuna Cloud Server! Yes, you read right, we are offering Cloud Servers completely setup with Razuna for those customers who need the ultimate experience of Razuna. Sort of, Razuna on your own.

The Open Source Version of Razuna is still available over at http://razuna.org and also received a complete re-design.

At this point, I would like to thank our designer team over at Fetzer & Weibel who have done a tremendous job. I can highly suggest them for any design work you need to have done.

Razuna Hosted Platform publicly available

razuna_logo_200As some of you might have already seen, we separated our Razuna domains into http://razuna.ORG, which will take you to the Open Source Version of our Digital Asset Management and now http://razuna.COM, which will bring up our newly launched Hosted Platform for your Digital Asset needs.

Yes, that is right, you can now enjoy all the benefit of Razuna without ever needing to run your own server. The Razuna Hosted Platform is available for free for up to 1GB storage/1GB traffic and afterwards for a very low price per 1GB storage/1GB traffic.

Given the fact that Razuna has become one of the most used and talked about open source Digital Asset Management solutions in the last couple of months, we are sure you will enjoy the benefit of the Razuna Hosted Platform as well. The Razuna Hosted Platform is based on the latest code base from the upcoming Razuna 1.2 version and features a lot of new enhancements. Here is a short list of available functions;

Sharing of folders and collections

Folders and so called “collections” (a bunch of assets spread in different folders combined in a convenient view) can be shared with the “world”. In other words, you can give everyone access to a designated folder/collection without them having to have access to your system. Moreover folder/collections can be secured with permissions or not.

Commenting of assets

Collaboration on assets is one step closer. We now have a commenting tool available within Razuna. That is, you can comment on any assets as many times as you want. But best of it, if you share your folder/collection (see above), commenting is available as well. Simply share a folder and have your clients comment on the assets within. No more email going back and forth or long discussion on the phone!

Razuna Desktop

As outlined in the last couple of blog posts here, we have been hard at work with bringing you a convenient Desktop tool to upload your assets locally. We are happy to say, that this tool is now available (well, in a day or two). With it you can run Razuna Desktop in the back and simply drag-and-drop your assets to Razuna Desktop and it will automatically upload your assets to your incoming folder. Razuna Desktop works both with the Razuna Hosted Platform and with a self hosted version. Now, where else do you get such a service?

These are only a couple of the new features. Make sure to check out the new Razuna Hosted Platform. I hope you are as excited as we are providing this service to you.

Adobe to make their ColdFusion product open source

In an unexpected move, Adobe have released their ColdFusion product to the open source community. In the associated press release Adobe stated the following reasons for the move:

“Adobe have always tried to bring a better and more capable product to the users. In recent years, however, improvements have plateaued. With the release of OpenBlueDragon and Railo Open Source there are thousands of people out there using those two products. This has made it increasingly difficult to justify the ongoing high cost of developing the ColdFusion Server on our own. In the end it’s the user who suffers.

The logical conclusion is to open up the problem and try to crowd source the server in the hope that the developer community picks it up.

We may see some teething problems at the start, but we think it will become the standard and everyone will work together to make it the best CFML server out there.”

However, some industry experts think this is just another example of Adobe trying to secure its position in the market. A source that wanted to remain anonymous said;

“Adobe has always tried to tight their customers to their ColdFusion Server offering. Some may start to question what value Adobe are adding; if they don’t control the core engine of ColdFusion server anymore; how can they make millions with open sourcing the server now?”

For Railo this move could as well mean the end of their open source offering. This has come to no better time, since Railo just released their Railo Open Source version today, the exact day that Adobe has decided to release their ColdFusion Server as open source. Might this be another move from the “giant” Adobe to control the CFML market?

Railo were contacted; and declined to comment, except to state that Railo considered the CFML server market dead and that building extensions and hosting for CFML projects were the tools of the future.

OpenBlueDragon has released a statement that they have studied the algorithm and have noted some bizarre elements; for instance is the CFDocument syntax, a feature that will create PDF documents from any web site, based on open source libraries. One might wonder, why this is so, since Adobe is the creator of PDF.

Adam Lehman, Adobe’s ColdFusion Product Manager has apparently stepped down in what the company say is a completely unrelated matter. However, inside sources say he is absolutely against the move and feels that Adobe have ‘thrown in the towel’.
