Coming up in Razuna 1.4.8: Add assets from your custom path

The other day we outlined “Import & Export of metadata” that is coming in Razuna 1.4.8. Today, we would like to show you another new feature of Razuna 1.4.8; Adding assets from your custom path.

This new feature alone will delight many customers as it allows, among other options, to import your files from any path on your server to Razuna in one single operation. Especially, for large scale imports, there is huge benefit in it, because it will import your data to Razuna successively and include all subfolders and assets within, without any browser limitation because the assets reside already on the server.

Of course, the options for “linking to folders” and “adding assets from the server” are still available, but this new option will add assets to Razuna (instead of linking them) and will be able to include subfolders and re-create them within Razuna.

Especially for customers who migrate from another system this option will save them lots of headache. In other words, simply dump your current library to one folder and make this folder available on your Razuna server. Once completed, enter the path to your library in the new “Import from path” window and Razuna will automatically read your whole library, include all assets, all subfolders, read in the metadata (did you know that Razuna can read & write metadata since version 1.0?), create previews of your assets and make them available in Razuna and thus within the high powered search. To top it off, with the new ”Import & Export of metadata” option you can add your own metadata right away as well!

Our tests with over 500GB of image, video, audio and document assets have checked out successfully and we are extremely excited to include this feature in the upcoming Razuna 1.4.8 release.

Razuna 1.4.7 is here – Labels and other improvements

Today marks the day that we are proudly bringing Razuna 1.4.7 to the world, another upgrade to the already most used open source Digital Asset Management System. We are extremely exited about this release, as we made major improvements in this version and brings one new feature to Razuna. The one new feature in Razuna 1.4.7 is called “Labels”.

Labels

The concept of Labels in Razuna is very similar to, say to the way how Labels work in Gmail. Labels are dynamic and can be assigned to any asset. In other words, Labels do all the work folders do and give you an extra bonus: you can add more than one Label to a asset. Once you’ve created a label, you can view all the items with that label by clicking the label name.

Labels can be applied to assets, folders, collections and comments with a easy to use textfield. You simply enter the label you want to apply and the Label system offers you a choice from pre-defined labels or you can add a new one by entering it within the textfield alone.

Administrators will love the option to turn on or off, the option to allow users to add labels by entering them in the label field or to only select from existing ones. Administrators can also add or edit labels in a dedicated Administration interface.

Important to know

With Razuna 1.4.7 we have improved the open source digital asset management system even further. We have updated the application engine to the latest version (OpenBD 2.0), made design improvements for long file names and input fields, added compatibility to those who run Razuna on a secure server (SSL), updated all Javascript libraries and updated the Upload tool so it works again with the latest browsers (especially with HTML5 capable browsers), updated the FTP handling, changed how users log into Razuna (so it works better and faster on large libraries), made improvement to scale better with cloud platforms and many more changes.

Additionally, we fixes issues that came up after the 1.4.6 release. Some fixed were made to widgets, FTP connections, version upload works now for Windows better, a security fix for searches, made some fixes to the API (thank you all for reporting) and fixed and issue with custom fields.

All in all, we are satisfying over 50 issues with Razuna 1.4.7. We are happy that Razuna 1.4.7 meets our customers expectations. The full release notes for Razuna 1.4.7 are also available.

At this point, we like to thank the Razuna community and all of our customers who are providing valuable feedback and keep driving Razuna forward. Thank you all for making Razuna better with every release!

Razuna 1.4.6 and Razuna Desktop 1.2.1 released

We are extremely exited to announce the immediate availability of Razuna 1.4.6 and Razuna Desktop 1.2.1. Razuna 1.4.6, a significant upgrade (despite the small jump in version number) adds several new features that will ease the management of a digital library even further.

We’ve added a number of new features since 1.4.5, including an additional mobile view version (to make your self hosted version compatible with the Razuna Google Chrome Extension!), the option to download assets directly in the folder view, updated the core for better performance, option to add and manipulate metadata from the API, refactored the search completely (advanced search, search in your custom fields, search in folders will also search in subfolders, etc.), support for XMP-Plus fields, improvement to image and video conversion and many more useful options. Additionally, we fixed a couple of issues that cropped up after the 1.4.5 release.

All in all, we have tracked and satisfied over 100 issues that customers have reported. We are happy that Razuna 1.4.6 meets our customers expectations. Below you will find the description of the new search options and the Google Chrome Extension in details.

Razuna 1.4.6 and the new powerful omnisearch

The new search alghorithm stores each metadata field in dedicated rows. In other words, each value is searchable on its own. We have gone a long way and enhanced our Advanced search form to include most common metadata fields. Still there might be cases, where you want to search on some special metadata fields that we have not exposed in the search form. Fear not, the all new powerful omnisearch lets you search for those fields as well.

Within Razuna you can now simply enter “scene_type:directly” and Razuna will return the images containing the value in the “scene_type” metadata field. You are not bound to any form, customization or to the whim of us including your metadata fields. You can simply enter any metadata field separated with a “:” and your search term.

At the same time, Razuna 1.4.6 features the option to search custom fields explicitly. In the past, all custom fields, were indexed as a whole, but now you have the option to search each one individually. This is a major boost in your productivity.

Furthermore, our Advanced Search form got a lot of love. You will be able to search each field on its own and for those documents who include extensive metadata fields (like images and PDF files) we included them in the advanced search as well. We included an “AND / OR” selector for, well, advanced searches, also.

Moreover, the search-in-a-search side-panel is now always visible in the search result, giving you the option to redefine your search results on the fly.

The Razuna Chrome Extension

The Razuna Chrome Extension allows you to browse your Razuna Library from within the Google Chrome browser without the need to open Razuna in a separate window.

The plugin was previously only available to customers of the Razuna Hosted Platform and is now fully compatible with the self-hosted edition of Razuna 1.4.6.

The plugin is still under development and will see some more features coming soon. We are planning to add search, uploading of assets within the plugin and more to it.

How to get Razuna

Razuna is available over at http://razuna.org. You have the option to use our preconfigured Razuna Virtual Server, download the dedicated Razuna Standalone Server or deploy to your own J2EE-Server with our Razuna WAR/EAR distribution.

Razuna is also available as a Hosted Solution over at http://razuna.com. For teams and organizations we also offer a dedicated Razuna Server offering.

The Razuna Hosted Platform has already been upgraded to the latest release. Our Razuna Cloud Server customers will be updated individually.

Razuna 1.4.4 available – enhancement and bug fix release

We are happy to publicly announce the immediate availability of Razuna 1.4.4. The new version brings enhancements and bug fixes. If you are running a older release we encourage you to upgrade to Razuna 1.4.4 as soon as possible.

The enhancements
For Razuna 1.4.4 we made some changes how the search works. From this release on, we automatically combine separate words with an “AND” operator. Providing you with more accurate search results. Additionally, we added a visual feedback to the search.

On the visual part, we also changed the way how folders are being shown to SystemAdmins & Administrators. Now, those users will see all folders by default (previously you had to explicitly request the view). Furthermore, we included the latest edition of the video player, which adds compatibility to the latest browser generations.

Last but not least, Developers have a reason to celebrate. With Razuna 1.4.4 we are introducing new options to the API. These are;

  • Modify Metadata (Link to the DeveloperGuide)
  • Uploading an asset returns the assetid and the asset type

The fixes
With the help of our community we were able to fix a couple of bugs that showed up after the 1.4.4 release. We fixed some bugs which affected Windows installations (some users could not add images to the system), also users with a MSSQL server got some unexpected errors due to the new ID system which was introduced in 1.4.2. Windows users will also be happy to see that we fixed bugs with writing the metadata, creating thumbnails and the playback of videos.

At this point, we would like to thank all our users for helping us and making Razuna the best open source digital asset management / media asset management solution out there.

As always, the complete release notes for Razuna 1.4.4 are available.
