Razuna 1.4.3 available

We are excited to announce the immediate availability of Razuna 1.4.3. The new version brings a couple of new features, enhancements and bug fixes. If you are running Razuna 1.4.2 we encourage you to upgrade to Razuna 1.4.3 as soon as possible.

The new features
With Razuna 1.4.3 you now have the option to create “Upload Templates“. These templates allow you to automatically create different versions of your assets during upload. Say, you have a image and want it to be available in other formats. You then simply need to select your Upload Template while uploading and Razuna will convert your asset(s) to the given formats. Of course, Upload Templates apply to images, videos and audio assets alike.

Additionally, you now have the option to move any folder back to the root level of your structure. Something that was not possible before. Furthermore, we have made some improvements to the API. The API now returns all the converted formats and also the width and height of images and videos. Especially, the XML response with the converted formats allows plugin developers to include those formats in their applications as well. (We will release a updated Razuna WordPress plugin with this option in the coming hours!)

Under the hood we updated some libraries and have included the latest version of Tomcat (7.x) and OpenBD.

The fixes
With the help of our community we were able to fix a couple of bugs that showed up after the 1.4.2 release. We have had some issues with shared folders (some users could not see the content of folders), that the basket download was not successful (under rare circumstances), that some videos could not be converted properly and some other pesky errors that made your live troublesome.

Thought, we try to release a bug free software, the reality sometimes looks different. Fortunately, we never sleep (just kidding) and were able to fix all reported issues with this release.

At this point, we would like to thank all our users for helping us and making Razuna the best open source digital asset management / media asset management solution out there.

As always, the complete release notes for Razuna 1.4.3 are available.

Razuna 1.4 Preview Release 2 available

It gives us great pleasure to make Razuna 1.4 RC2 available. This release is meant for testing and it shouldn’t be long before a final release. We kindly ask everyone to download and test this release. You can also upgrade your current Razuna 1.3.5 or 1.4 RC1 installation with this release.

In the release notes for Razuna 1.4 RC1 we already outlined the major new features of Razuna 1.4. Here are the added features for RC2:

New Upload Tool
In a recent post this week we introduced the new Upload Tool in length. Now, this new Uploader is also available for general consumption in the Open Source version.

Refined Startup Wizard & Moving between databases
We completely reworked the Startup Wizard. As noted in a previous post, you will now be guided trough the initial setup. Furthermore, you can choose during setup what database you want to use. With the new Startup Wizard you can even backup an existing Razuna setup and move to another database and import the data during setup. Because of this, we have also made some changes to the general Administration for switching a database. Now, everything is handled within Razuna for you.

Overall speed improvements
Another area we focused on lately, was stability and speed. Both could be achieved with refined coding for adding assets and batch operations. We are happy to see that our stress testing, which adds 500000 assets in one upload process, performs stable. The new code does not “hammer” the CPU and RAM as much as previous versions did, also. Among code changes we also moved the Standalone Tomcat server to 6.0.29 and added the latest OpenBD Application Engine and JS frameworks to the game.

No more “/assets” path needed
In previous versions, one had to add an additional context path to the J2EE server (Tomcat, Jetty, JBoss, etc.). This is no longer needed anymore.

What’s coming next?
Since this is already the second preview release we are almost done with all the wanted features for Razuna 1.4. Thought, here are the features we are planning to include for the final release;

  • Option to store assets on Amazon S3 and Eucalyptus (Nirvanix is already supported)
  • Option to import/export from Evernote
  • Option to export or share assets with Facebook, Flickr, etc.
  • Add OGG Video conversion support and also playback with HTML5 capable browsers

I hope you enjoy using Razuna as much as we have making it. Go grab your copy now over at http://razuna.org or sign up for a free hosted account over at http://razuna.com.

Razuna 1.2 released – the next step in Open Source Digital Asset Management

We are very excited to announce that Razuna 1.2 is immediately available for download. Razuna 1.2 brings many new features in the area of image and video handling, usability, collaboration on assets and speed improvements. Here is a short video outlining some of the enhancements.

Major improvement makes managing your assets a breeze

Our users have been giving us great feedback on the usability of Razuna and what they would like to see.  Some of the new features are direct needs of real world usage and have been constantly tested by the users itself. Razuna 1.2 has seen a lot of major add-ons and so it is not easy to highlight only a few, but here are those who we feel are the most noteworthy;

Version Control
For each asset you now have a Version Control system. Thus whenever you upload a new version of your image, video or document, the original version will be saved and stored for you. Within the version tab you can then also play the version back, where as a new version of the current version is stored again.

Initial Folder View and Folder Tree Navigation
Many have asked for it, so we are very happy to give it to you. We now have a Folder-Navigation tree structure for you. No need to reload the folder navigation anymore. Also, we changed the initial folder view to show you all the assets, independently of the asset type, when you navigate to a folder.

Commenting and sharing of a folder/collection
Another demand that many have expressed is to be able to have a commenting section for each asset. This is now available with Razuna 1.2. You can comment on each asset within the “comments” tab. Furthermore, the commenting takes on a larges scale approach when you combine it with sharing. Sharing is a new feature, which allows you to share your folder or collection with the same users/groups within Razuna or simply with “Everyone”. If you share a folder/collection with “Everyone”, it will be available under a public URL for everyone to see. Moreover, each asset can be commented on. This is a great feature for all of you who need to share your work with clients or alike.

Print to PDF
Any asset, search result and folder view can now be converted to a PDF for printing. We setup a printing wizard which lets you choose the size of the paper, how many assets you want on a page, size, and more.

Many more things
Oracle database support for file system storage, Developer API, PDF & PSD & AI & ESP thumbnail support, option to include assets from subfolders within a folder view, etc. The list is quite impressive. There many more improvements, features and bug fixes done in Razuna 1.2 and they are all listed over at our publicly available Issue Tracker.

What’s next?
Thought, Razuna 1.2 is seeing the light today, we are already going forward to 1.3 and beyond. Some features which will come are embedding video and images from social networks, audio support, MS SQL/PostgreSQL support, importing your Cumulus catalog, general backup/import functions and much more. Feel free to shape and participate the next version of Razuna and add your feature request and bugs (yes, those too) at our publicly available Issue Tracker.

Users of our Razuna Hosted Platform have had the joy of working with the latest Razuna 1.2 already!
