Razuna 1.5.2 – bug fix and enhancement release

Razuna 1.5.2, now available for download, is a enhancement and bug fix release for Razuna 1.5 and Razuna 1.5.1.

After nearly one month since the 1.5.1 release, we’ve identified and fixed a couple of bugs. Some of the most notable bug fixes are;

  • users were not able to use “search in a search” or search according the date
  • folder settings for collections was accidentally removed
  • uploading a PDF could fail under some circumstances
  • some listing wasn’t properly refreshed due to the caching

Our tradition to not only release a version with only bug fixes also holds for Razuna 1.5.2. There are 11 enhancements in Razuna 1.5.2, here are ones that stand out the most;

  • The label browser only shows the files that users have access too (finally)
  • Converting RAW images files has been improved (thanks to the many reports)
  • Support for MXF videos and also option to convert into MXF video format
  • The API can now handle very large file uploads (tested with >40GB files)

The release notes for Razuna 1.5.2 describes the 31 issues in more details.

We hope you enjoy this release as much as we had making it. As always, we welcome your feedback.

News: Enterprise Version from Open Source and Cloud Media Management Provider Razuna

Following the successful launch of version 1.5 of the company’s digital asset management software, Razuna now announces the availability of Razuna Enterprise Edition. This edition features a number of high performance enterprise features, specifically designed for enterprise needs.

Apart from minor changes to optimize the user experience, Razuna Enterprise Edition introduces these new features: Workflow, Rendering Farm and Akamai integration.

Razuna Enterprise Edition is now available and will be a released under a licensing model for businesses but remains free for universities and non-profit organizations. Existing Razuna users can also upgrade by using the newly released Razuna plugin feature. A feature, which also allows third party developers to develop their own plugins for Razuna.

Details of the Razuna cloud service are available at:  http://razuna.com

“We have seen a steady increase in enterprise customers, who have opted to go for Razuna,” says CEO, Jens Strandbygaard. “We strive hard to keep things simple and provide exceptional value for money, and businesses have discovered that our platform more than fits their needs at a fraction of the cost for comparable systems. The only real lacking feature was workflow – so we listened and developed it.”

Apart from the workflow engine, Razuna released a rendering farm, which enables the customers to distribute the load of converting many images, audio files or videos to many servers in the backend.

“Razuna is designed and built on an enterprise architecture with J2EE as the main engine,” says founder and CTO, Nitai Aventaggiato. “So handling large volumes of files and concurrent users has never been an issue. The workflow just adds that final enterprise feature that allows large corporations to fully enjoy all the benefits of our technology.”

Razuna serves more than 2,000 customers worldwide and more than 60,000 users have downloaded the software in the past 12 months.

“The rendering farm is the result of a single customer, a major European broadcaster, who uses Razuna for the digital video library. As they need to convert thousands of videos on an almost daily basis, we developed the rendering farm to distribute the load to multiple rendering servers.”

Razuna’s customers come from all over the world with a majority in the US. But the company serves customers in almost every country in the world on a daily basis.

“Razuna is a highly successful SaaS and Open Source business,” says Jens Strandbygaard. “And with our keen focus on simplicity and value for money, we have created one of the most versatile and powerful digital asset management platforms in the market, whilst maintaining very competitive pricing.”

The most prominent new features of the Razuna Enterprise Edition are:

  • Workflow Engine
Complete customizable workflow automation. Set up automated tasks and actions based events such as upload, delete, edit, move etc. Multiple actions can be triggered for a single event, and they can also be connected to specific folders.
  • Rendering Farm
The rendering farms distributes the server load on one or more rendering servers, which will handle the process of converting images, video and audio files to other formats or sizes. This allows customers to upload and convert thousands of images, videos and audio files without putting unnecessary strain on the application or database servers.
  • Akamai Plugin
Razuna user who use Akamai for storage can now seamlessly connect their Akamai account to Razuna and store their files with Akamai. It works by simply entering the Akamai account details through the plugin.

Razuna 1.5.1 redesign and maintenance release

It has been exactly one month since the release of Razuna 1.5. The response to Razuna 1.5 has been overwhelming and exceeded our expectations. But instead of taking a break, the team went ahead and continued to add, enhance features and tirelessly listened to the community. Today, we are happy to announce Razuna 1.5.1.

Razuna 1.5.1 was planned to be a maintenance release to Razuna 1.5, but as it turned out we did not wanted to hold back with some of the new stuff we’ve build in the meantime. Thus, this release introduces a redesigned entry page (with a convenient upload button), a updated folder view and most prominently a redesigned file detail view where all relevant information can be found in one place (place have a look at our blog post outlining this in more details). Since we are speaking of design and usability, users can now select your files with the mouse/keyboard in the folder view, the mobile side has been completely redesigned and with this release users of the self-hosted edition can use the recently released Razuna Google Chrome Extensions.

Furthermore, we have changed the permissions for “read-only” slightly. This means that “read-only” groups are not able to download the original file anymore, except one sets it to download in the shared options. On the sharing section we now propagate changes from the folder settings to all sub-folders and done some more tweaking to how sharing works.

Razuna 1.5 introduced a new caching engine. Naturally, sometimes the caching was done too much or wasn’t refreshed properly. Razuna 1.5.1 fixes this in many parts. Moreover, the API2 is now also using the same caching and thus developers should not see a “delay” anymore in their results from the API.

Last but not least, we have had some issues with connecting to FTP servers. In short, the engine wasn’t able to deal with some FTP servers and especially with folder & files that contained spaces or any foreign characters. This release, contains the latest update to the engine which resolves this issue. If you are interest, the Razuna 1.5.1 release notes are happy to welcome you.

While we are sure you enjoy this release we wanted to let you know that this release also builds on the new Razuna Plugin API that enables developers to build their own plugins for Razuna. Furthermore, we will soon release the all new Workflow plugin. More information about the Razuna Plugin API and the Workflow will be revealed soon.

Razuna 1.5 Release Candidate 2 available

We are happy to announce that the second release candidate for Razuna 1.5 is now available for download. If there are no further issues being reported, this release candidate will mark the final release. Therefore, we encourage everyone to download and test this release – please though, not on your production server unless you’re extra adventurous.

In this release, due to the underlining changes of the application server engine, we have introduced a brand new caching system. By default the new caching is using the memory and disk for storing the cache and can be configured individually to use Memcached, MongoDB or CouchBase as the caching engine. Additionally, we now have an option to schedule backups and the import of labels works with sub-labels also. Furthermore, we changed the default settings for thumbnails from 120px to 400px, upgraded the internal Tomcat server to 7.0.28 and the default setting for checking for the same file has been turned to “off”. Moreover, we fixed issues with ZIP extracting (re-wrote the whole code), converting of Audio files and adding of PDF files works again. All in all, we tackled around 30 issues since RC1.

The Razuna 1.5 release notes outline all the changes in more detail.

We encourage everyone to test things out, so we can fix things before the final release. If you find problems, there are a few ways to let us know:

Go ahead and download Razuna 1.5 Release Candidate 2 now and become a part of the Digital Asset Management Revolution!
