Shared Folders & Collections got some love – Razuna Open Source Digital Asset Management

We just rolled out brand new features to the very popular shared folders & collections functionality in Razuna. The new features allow you to protect your original assets from downloading, enable uploading to the shared folder or collection, disable commenting and last but not least have your client order assets with you!

Let us introduce you to each new feature.

New look & feel for shared folders and collections

With the new features we also thought about the usability of the shared folder/collection and have come up with a small re-design of it. The new design builds on the already popular interface of Razuna and offers your users a tab interface. In the upper corner we have the search box and there is the useful thumbnail view. Users can put assets into the basket for downloading or ordering. Click on the image on the right or simply log on to Razuna to enjoy the new option.

Ordering System (Lightbox capability)

Customers who want to give global access to their assets, but need to have the assets (images, videos, audios and documents) ordered with them will finally be able to use Razuna in this way. When you enable the “Ordering System” all assets in the shared folder/collection can not be downloaded anymore, but instead users will have to order them with you directly. You are able to designate a user who is responsible for the orders. This user will then see an “Order” tab where he can process the orders individually, meaning he can send the assets by email, send them a URL for download and more. We are using the already popular basket for the ordering, thus making it familiar to you and your users.

Uploading to your shared folder or collection

Now, it has become even easier for your clients to interact with you organization. With the new “Uploading” option within the shared folder/collection you allow your clients to upload their assets directly to your system. There is no need anymore to give them a dedicated account within Razuna (of course, you can still do so). If you enable “Uploading” they will have a link called “Add files” where they will be able to upload their assets to you. We are using the same upload tool that you have come to love within Razuna for this. Thus, drag & drop will be available and multi-upload capabilities.

Protect your original asset & commenting

Many customers have asked us for a way to protect their original assets within the shared folder and to disable commenting. With the new option to disable those we satisfy the need for this request. You will now be able to disable downloading of the original asset and commenting in general.

Enable or disable download of each asset or version

Furthermore, we have an additional option with the detail view of each asset that allows you to enable/disable the downloading or ordering of an asset. With it, you can set this individually for each asset and version. This gives you a very fine granular security model for all your assets and great control what is allowed.

Keep in mind that all those settings can be set for each folder / collection individually. Giving you the most flexible way to work with your assets.

We know that many of you have been waiting for this. We are especially happy that we can deliver it and make it available as of immediately. If you have a Razuna Hosted Account with us or a Razuna Cloud Server then the new features should already be visible in your account by now. Else it will follow in the coming hours.

The new sharing features are also a part of the soon to be released Razuna 1.4 release for those who wish to host Razuna yourself.

Razuna 1.4 Preview Release 2 available

It gives us great pleasure to make Razuna 1.4 RC2 available. This release is meant for testing and it shouldn’t be long before a final release. We kindly ask everyone to download and test this release. You can also upgrade your current Razuna 1.3.5 or 1.4 RC1 installation with this release.

In the release notes for Razuna 1.4 RC1 we already outlined the major new features of Razuna 1.4. Here are the added features for RC2:

New Upload Tool
In a recent post this week we introduced the new Upload Tool in length. Now, this new Uploader is also available for general consumption in the Open Source version.

Refined Startup Wizard & Moving between databases
We completely reworked the Startup Wizard. As noted in a previous post, you will now be guided trough the initial setup. Furthermore, you can choose during setup what database you want to use. With the new Startup Wizard you can even backup an existing Razuna setup and move to another database and import the data during setup. Because of this, we have also made some changes to the general Administration for switching a database. Now, everything is handled within Razuna for you.

Overall speed improvements
Another area we focused on lately, was stability and speed. Both could be achieved with refined coding for adding assets and batch operations. We are happy to see that our stress testing, which adds 500000 assets in one upload process, performs stable. The new code does not “hammer” the CPU and RAM as much as previous versions did, also. Among code changes we also moved the Standalone Tomcat server to 6.0.29 and added the latest OpenBD Application Engine and JS frameworks to the game.

No more “/assets” path needed
In previous versions, one had to add an additional context path to the J2EE server (Tomcat, Jetty, JBoss, etc.). This is no longer needed anymore.

What’s coming next?
Since this is already the second preview release we are almost done with all the wanted features for Razuna 1.4. Thought, here are the features we are planning to include for the final release;

  • Option to store assets on Amazon S3 and Eucalyptus (Nirvanix is already supported)
  • Option to import/export from Evernote
  • Option to export or share assets with Facebook, Flickr, etc.
  • Add OGG Video conversion support and also playback with HTML5 capable browsers

I hope you enjoy using Razuna as much as we have making it. Go grab your copy now over at http://razuna.org or sign up for a free hosted account over at http://razuna.com.

Razuna.com and Razuna.org re-designed

We are proud that today (well yesterday) we put up the re-design of our websites at http://razuna.com and http://razuna.org. With over 30000 downloads of Razuna and with a growing customer and community base, we thought it was time for a change. We think that the new design reflects our growth and gives room for expansion.

Just as before, we are making the .com domain available for our Razuna Hosted Platform and the newly announced Razuna Cloud Server! Yes, you read right, we are offering Cloud Servers completely setup with Razuna for those customers who need the ultimate experience of Razuna. Sort of, Razuna on your own.

The Open Source Version of Razuna is still available over at http://razuna.org and also received a complete re-design.

At this point, I would like to thank our designer team over at Fetzer & Weibel who have done a tremendous job. I can highly suggest them for any design work you need to have done.
