Razuna updates coming your way

In the last couple of weeks we have made some major improvement to Razuna, both to the Razuna Hosted Platform, the Razuna Cloud Servers and of course to the Open Source version. Let us outline some of the major changes;

Folder & Collection RSS, Excel and Word view

Getting notified when new items arrive in a folder or collection is important, both for us and for your team. Now, there is a convenient way to stay up-to-date, that is you can subscribe to each folder/collection by RSS. This allows you to add the RSS feed to your browser (Firefox Live Bookmark, Google Reader, etc) and you will get automatically notified of updates. Additionally, you have the option to view the content of the folder/collection in Excel or in Word (with preview images).

Oh and before we forget, these options are also available for shared folders and collections!

Icon changes

Creating a user interface for an application like Razuna is never an easy task. On one hand, we want to keep it intuitive and not cluttered with “features” but on the other hand, one still needs to make those “features” available. Recently we have overhauled the folder views slightly and recently added icon changes.

The top bar shows now the most used actions in (hopefully) descriptive icons. Additionally the new “view” icons haven been added and we rearranged them a bit to group them. In other words, selecting all assets, reloading a folder and adding a folder should now be more then obvious.

Razuna has the option to show your assets in the thumbnail view (by default), in a list view or in a “combined” one which allows batch editing of filename, description and keywords. In our testing we found out that most users did not even know that, despite using them. Thus, we are now showing the different view options in a prominent place.

Improved error handling

Yes, bugs and errors are inconvenient. While we try to bring you a hassle free experience with your Digital Asset Management, it always can happen that something goes wrong. But now with the new error handling your experience with those pesky errors has just improved. Instead of a big error message, you will only receive a notification that there has been an error. In the back we are saving the error to a database and you or your administration are then able to view them and even send them directly to our tracking system over at http://issues.razuna.com.

Speed, Speed, Speed

In the recent releases we have always improved performance for your Digital Asset Management. Recently, we made some major code changes in loading and showing previews on the Razuna Hosted Platform and for those customers who are running Razuna with Amazon S3, Nirvanix or Eucalyptus.

Now, we made further changes and recently added database caching to it as well. With database caching we could improve performance by 30% and are now seeing load times for large folders with 1000 or more asets in the millisecond range. Of course, your results might be different due to connections, location, bandwidth, etc. But rest assured that from an application level we are doing application caching, database caching and are trimming just about every bit of code for performance.

Phantom assets

In a recent update, we introduced a placeholder text for assets which are in the progress of adding to the system. But sometimes, it could happen that due to circumstances the asset could not be properly added to the system. Thus you were left with the placeholder text in your folder listing with no way to remove it. Now, this is possible. You will see when you have added the asset and be able to remove the record.

Import / Export with SQL script

In Razuna 1.4 we introduced the option to Import and Export your records in the XML format. Since XML might be to verbose for a simple import to another Razuna instance we added the option to export to a SQL script file. This gives you the freedom to import within Razuna’s own import function or pass the script on to your database administrator.

Adding RAW image support

More and more Photographers are using Razuna to manage their library. Many of them use the RAW format for their photos. With the latest updates we added the RAW format in order for Razuna to read and write the metadata and create thumbnails.

When are these new features available?

These new features are already available for our customers on the Razuna Hosted Platform. Our Razuna Cloud Server customers will see them in the coming days. Those with a self hosted version will see them in the Christmas Edition of Razuna (that will be 1.4.1 or more) :-)

We are already working to bring you even more before the year ends. As always we are always happy to receive any comments or feedback.

Deploy Razuna in a virtualized environment or in the cloud

As the year 2009 comes to an end, we think it is save to say that a lot of organizations have or will be moving to a virtual environment for their IT needs. With the proven business model and technology of the likes of VMWare, XEN and other for Virtualization and fabulous Cloud Environments from Amazon and Nirvanix you simply own it to your company (and your financial department) to at least consider these options.

We here at Razuna Ltd. are big fans of virtual environments and the cloud services offered by Amazon and Nirvanix. So, it is no wonder that we have also included the option to deploy Razuna – our Open Source Digital Asset Management Solution - in the cloud and also store the assets in the cloud as well.

Deploy Razuna to VMware, XEN, Parallels, KVM, VirtualIron, Amazon EC2

For over a year now, we are offering the Razuna Virtual Server and it has become big success for us. Since we are not only offering you a pre-made virtual image of Razuna with its own operating system, but you have the full options to configure your own operating system, bundle your own applications and set the amount of used RAM and size of Hard Disk yourself. Moreover, the build process lets you deploy directly to your favorite Virtualization platform like VMWare, XEN, KVM, etc.

But if you really want to go all the way to the cloud, then the possibility to deploy directly to Amazon’s EC2 offering is one click away. We have deployments ready for EC2 Small, EC2 Large, EC2 Extra Large, EC2 High CPU Medium and EC2 High CPU Extra Large environments.

By far, the Razuna Virtual Server it is the fastest and simplest way to go all virtual and right to the cloud!

Below is a short video walking you trough the steps to create your own Razuna Image.

Storing your assets in the Cloud (Cloud Storage, Content Delivery Network)

Cloud Storage combined with a CDN (Content Delivery Network) gives your organization the possibility to stream those assets in the fastest possible way to your users. Be it for your company internal usage or for your customers, a CDN provides the best option for that.

We understand that a lot of organizations do need Razuna for streaming videos and images to their customers. Thus it is no wonder that we have included the Cloud Storage option within Razuna by default. Furthermore, the integration of Razuna with a Cloud Storage provider like Nirvanix (option for Amazon S3 is coming real soon) is a simple click away.

All you need to do to enable Nirvanix within Razuna, is to set your Nirvanix Key, Name and Password within the Administration panel and immediately you will store and retrieve all your assets within Razuna with your cloud storage provider.

Nirvanix

Razuna, Virtualization and the Cloud makes a perfect team

Best of all the described options here is that it is already available for your to deploy! You too, can enter the world of Virtualization, Cloud computing and managing your assets today with the Razuna download.

Moreover, the concept of server virtualization, Amazon S3 and Nirvanix CDN is already a proven concept since our very own Razuna Hosted Platform (SaaS Digital Asset Management) is based on these technologies and used by over hundred of users each day.

Razuna 1.1.4 is here

razuna_logo_200We are happy to announce the official release of Razuna 1.1.4, another fine release of the already much hyped open source Digital Asset Management. Razuna makes it easy for any individual, small firm or big organization to manage all aspects of Digital Assets in a totally hassle free environment.

Razuna 1.1.4 brings the following new features to the already existing features;

Folder Permissions
A folder can now be owned by a user only. Previously, you had to share a folder with the “Everyone” group. Now, you can simply uncheck the “Everyone” group and the folder will only be accessible to you. Others will not see the folder and all assets within are protected. Also, assets can not be found with the search once they are in a user protected folder. We also fixed an issue with inheritance of folder permissions.

Internet Explorer Compatible
It’s not always easy to develop for all platforms and all browsers alike. Even thought we only use CSS and Javascript, there are sometimes browser platform issues that can not be overcome easily. Razuna 1.1.4 is now compatible with IE 7 & 8. Whereas Razuna acts and looks much better with IE8 then IE7 (don’t turn on Compatible mode, that thing makes it worse)…

Performance Improvements
Due to a new version of the Application Server and its new feature to cache Javascript, CSS files and certain parts of Razuna, the new version is magnitudes faster. But we not only improved the loading of Razuna, but also streamlined our code much more. You can see an immediate effect of this new performance by uploading your assets. Assets are now uploaded in the back and you will be notified by eMail of the upload process, respectively when the assets has been uploaded to the server.

Miscellaneous
Our international users will be happy to see that Razuna can now search words with foreign characters (like German umlauts and Norwegian characters) correctly. You can now upload your own logo and it will be shown everywhere instead of the default Razuna logo. User timeouts are handled correctly and we made a couple of subtle design changes.

As always you can download Razuna 1.1.4 over at the Razuna download page. Users of Razuna 1.1.3 will get notified within the system. Upgrading to the new version is outlined over at the Razuna Wiki (it is a simple step and only takes about 5 minutes).

Did you know that you can deploy Razuna to your favorite virtual environment? With our Razuna Virtual Server Image you can deploy to Amazon EC2, VMWare (also Server and ESX(i)), Parallels, XEN, VirtualIron, etc. Simply head over to the dedicated Razuna Virtual Server page and build your own Virtual Server. You’ll literally be up and running within minutes. Deployment of a Digital Asset Management has never been easier.
