Ask that DAM question
We realize that there are many organizations out there that are planing or thinking about to implement a Digital Asset Management to make it easier for them to control and manage all assets within the company.
Well, what sounds like a good idea (and it is a good idea) is made into a big issue when you talk to some DAM vendors and sometimes blows up your infrastructure and implementation plan unnecessarily. That is not to say that it does not take time and a thoughtful plan to implement a DAM, I just think that there is no need to overdue something that can be done and used in a fraction of time that most vendors want you to.
Let’s not forget, vendors make most of their money from selling you consultation, be it for analyzing your infrastructure and writing a “infrastructure paper” (which mainly misses the point). At the end, they are hired for the very company that is trying to sell you a license.
Therefore in the true sense of a open source Digital Asset Management, we are starting to offer our professional background of DAM services, which we have gained over many years of using and implementing DAM systems in customer projects, to you!
That is, that if you have a question about a planed DAM installation or any DAM related question you can leave a comment on this page or send us the question with our contact form. We will then either publish the answer (with your permission, of course) on this blog or establish a discussion with you.
(…and no, we will not only “push our system” onto you. You will get an answer that makes sense to you and your organization.)

I will be talking to a client about implementing a DAM system soon and am interested in using Razuna.
Im curious about 2 issues with typical DAM products, and your own of course.
1) How difficult is it to add support for new digital formats as they come out?
A related question is can I use the DAM to “upgrade” to new formats (i.e. mpeg -> mpeg4) or do i need to do this manually?
2) If I store static images at high resolutions can a DAM be setup to deliver that image at lower resolution on the fly? Or should I be storing each DPI value for an image into the DAM itself and mark it accordingly.
thanks

Sorry, for the late reply, our blog software did not send us any emails notifications anymore for new comments.
1. How difficult is it to add support for new digital formats as they come out?
Most DAM products should not have a problem with “new formats”. Especially, formats are not changing much. In that regard vendors can work with proposed formats before their release dates and could push out updates to their products.
Currently, all formats in use are well established and should be supported by all systems. In the end, the DAM should help you manage all you assets and not enforce a limitation on you.
Some systems, like Razuna, offer you additional functionalities for some formats. As a example, within Razuna you can convert videos and images on the fly to the most used formats.
2. Images and Conversion
I can only speak for Razuna. The concept of Razuna is that you store your original image which will never be altered again. From that image you are then able to convert it to any size and any format of your desire.
Once again, I apologize for the late response. Please feel free to contact me anytime again.
Kind Regards,
