Crew and Camera Man visible in 24 redemption

Those who know me, know that I am a big fan of the 24 show. Obviously, I couldn’t wait to see the 2 hours “Redemption” which should be a bridge from season 6 to season 7 (which is airing in January 2009).

Anyhow, while watching “Redemption” I noticed that in one scene the crew and camera man is visible. In the scene were Jack and the boys run into the forest, being chased by the army, Jack hides behind a tree and the whole take is quite fast so I guess the crew had no time anymore to hide :-)

In the picture below you can see Jack on the right side and the crew behind the bush on the left. The camera is quite visible.

Ask that DAM question

We realize that there are many organizations out there that are planing or thinking about to implement a Digital Asset Management to make it easier for them to control and manage all assets within the company.

Well, what sounds like a good idea (and it is a good idea) is made into a big issue when you talk to some DAM vendors and sometimes blows up your infrastructure and implementation plan unnecessarily. That is not to say that it does not take time and a thoughtful plan to implement a DAM, I just think that there is no need to overdue something that can be done and used in a fraction of time that most vendors want you to.

Let’s not forget, vendors make most of their money from selling you consultation, be it for analyzing your infrastructure and writing a “infrastructure paper” (which mainly misses the point). At the end, they are hired for the very company that is trying to sell you a license.

Therefore in the true sense of a open source Digital Asset Management, we are starting to offer our professional background of DAM services, which we have gained over many years of using and implementing DAM systems in customer projects, to you!

That is, that if you have a question about a planed DAM installation or any DAM related question you can leave a comment on this page or send us the question with our contact form. We will then either publish the answer (with your permission, of course) on this blog or establish a discussion with you.

(…and no, we will not only “push our system” onto you. You will get an answer that makes sense to you and your organization.)

Time Machine disables Bluetooth

I have to admit, that I haven’t used much of the build in features of MacOS X in the past, so I haven’t really hit any problems in running my setup.

So, today I thought that I give Time Machine a try. I mean, after all it sounds very impressing and I also want to travel, at least once, trough space with my Mac.

Connecting my LaCie Rugged Firewire drive was a no brainer, but as soon as I enabled Time Machine my connection to my Logitech TravelMouse Bluetooth enabled Mouse was lost! Surely, I must have hit a “disable bluetooth” button or alike somewhere, right? Or is the battery of my mouse dead? Bluetooth is still on?

Well, it turns out that on some machines, as soon as you turn on Time Machine you will loose connection to your bluetooth devices! It also turns out that I am not the only one with Time Machine problems. If you read trough this Apple Discussion topic you will see that there are some other “mean errors” involved with Time Machine.

So far for now, let’s hope that Apple will fix these issues in the upcoming 10.5.6 release (which apparently is ready to be released).

What the Open Source Barometer tells us

Alfresco, a company that publishes a open source ECM, does also feature a Open Source Barometer over at http://www.opensourcebarometer.org. According to their own saying; “The Alfresco Open Source Barometer survey is the largest open source enterprise infrastructure/stack survey. The third global survey covers data provided by over 25,000 of Alfresco’s 74,000 community members during the period of April to September 2008. “.

Since the Barometer shows us a door into the Enterprise open source usage what can we learn from it?

For Operating System we see that RedHat and Ubuntu are the clear leaders for Linux deployment. Look at how much Ubuntu has caught up. Ubuntu is not as long in the business as RedHat and I hear a lot of people taking on the Ubuntu Server. Looks like RedHat has to be on the look out. A obvious thing is that most will develop and test on Windows, but will deploy on Linux.

We see that Tomcat is still the most used Application Server, as it is our choice of server with Razuna, our very own open source Digital Asset Management, with over 67% compared to JBoss with 17%. The choice of database is with most the famous MySQL, followed by Oracle.

Thought that with the recent 10 million download for OpenOffice we see that MS Office is still the most used business application and despite the growing numbers of XEN marketing VMware is still the choice for most businesses to deploy Virtualization on.

One thing that really stood out for me is that Open Source is really at the “Long Tail”, that most businesses will go with a mixed stack (Open Source and proprietary software) and that Microsoft will have a impact on the Enterprise world and the Open Source community with their aggressive partnership. One thing I can tell from my own experience at a recent BizSpark introduction event is that MS will make inroads with a lot of businesses and startups.

A big thing for RIA and Adobe Flex is that 24% of the 25000 questioned community members take to Flex, that is second after 52% on Ajax and way ahead of the 8% of MS Silverlight.
