Razuna 1.1, open source digital asset management, now available

We are very happy to announce that Version 1.1 of Razuna – our open source Digital Asset Management System with integrated Web Content Management – is now available (and this on the day that Elvis died and Madonna turns 50)!

Version 1.1 features a embedded database that lets you deploy Razuna within minutes and without any additional database setup. The embedded database performs very well and holds up in production environments as well. Of course, support for the Oracle database is still given.

We also increased the speed on some asset operations and make now extensive use of the Lucene search engine. Additionally we included a Upgrade Manager, which makes upgrading to a new version a breeze. For the CMS part we updated FCKEditor to release 2.6.3 which fixes some issues that users experienced on Firefox 3.

This release of Razuna is a major leap for us, since we have now transitioned to a complete Open Source distribution, where all components used are now open sourced. For the technically inclined Razuna leverages the following open source components; OpenBD (Lucene included), Tomcat and H2 (I am going to blog some more about this database). As always, this release comes as a WAR/EAR distribution or bundled with Tomcat as a Standalone Server.

Razuna is a professional digital asset management/media asset management with an integrated web content management that delivers and makes management of your digital assets a simple task. Razuna is licensed under a dual-license (AGPL and commercial) and can be downloaded at http://www.razuna.com. The Wiki is available at http://wiki.sixsigns.com and the public Issues Tracker at http://issues.sixsigns.com (both products proudly sponsored by Atlassian (Confluence and Jira) ).

(We are aware that our forum is down right now. We should be up and running on Monday again. Thank you for all your patience.)

Deploying OpenBD is now easier then ever

The OpenBD project just released an updated OpenBD/Jetty bundle. With this release the directory structure wasd rearranged to make it obvious where all the pieces go, and most importantly, OpenBD is installed into the root context, making CFML processing available to all websites and contexts.

What this means is a much reduced overhead when running multiple websites as there will only be one OpenBD instance running and it allows you to quickly add new websites.

Head over to the blog of OpenBD to read up the whole release article.

Migrate from Subclipse to Subversive on MacOS X

For many years I have been using Eclipse with the fine Subversion plug-in. Since I have updated my Eclipse to the Ganymede release (Version 3.4) I unfortunately run into one problem after another. Especially the SVN Repository browser failed to work most of the time.

So, after putting up with this situation for the last 2 months and applying all Subclipse updates in the meantime (and still no working 100%) I decided that I will give the Subversive plug-in a go. This is not a blog post favoring one or the other, but simply what is working for me and proves to work.

I have over 20 projects in different SVN repositories and thus I was eager to find out how to migrate my projects the best way. I looked all over the web, but only found some confusing information or nothing at all (excuse me if anything is available but honestly could not find it).

Thus I thought I publish my steps here:

  1. We assume you already have subclipse installed, thus go to “Help/Software Update”. In the following window click on “Installed Software” and scroll down until you see all installed “Subversion” plug-ins.
  2. Uninstall all “subclipse”, snv and JavaHL plug-ins, except “Subclipse” itself.
  3. Restart Eclipse.
  4. Go to each project that you have in subversion and do a right click, choose Team and then click on “Disconnect…”. Make sure that you keep your project settings.
  5. Restart Eclipse.
  6. Now uninstall Subclipse.
  7. Restart Eclipse.
  8. Now you are ready to install Subversive. Do do that you open up “Software Update” again. Navigate to the “Ganymede” tree and choose under “Collaboration Tools” the Subversive plug-in. These are called “SVN Team Provider” and is a bit confusing at first, but rest assured it is the Subversive plug-in.
  9. Once that is installed you will also need to add the SVN connectors. Due to some licensing issues you will need to grab them from a different site. Within the “Software Update” window add a new site and enter the following URL “http://www.polarion.org/projects/subversive/download/eclipse/2.0/ganymede-site/”.
Once that site is loaded you will see three categories. Open the “Subversive SVN Connectors” and select the “Subversive SVN Connectors” and the “SVNKit 1.2.0 ……..” one. The later is quite important since I could not get Subversive to work with most repositories by selecting the “SVNKit 1.1.7 implementation” one. But the “SVNKit 1.2.0″ works just fine.
  10. Restart Eclipse.
  11. Now with each disconnected subversion project do a right click, select “Team” and then “Share Projects…”. You should then get a dialog asking you some questions about the Subversion project, mostly you have to enter name and password again and you should be all set.

So far, all is well. SVN repository browsing is still not 100% working, but at least I can connect most of the time and browse it. If that happens a reboot of Eclipse will get me back in the game.

I am sure there are other ways to do it, but this has worked fine for me and worked with all projects.

You are being fooled and all this in the name of the game

I guess we are all aware that the Chinese do about everyhting that the world thinks they do no wrong and treat the human rights fair and that China is one of the best places to leave.

First they wanted us to believe that the Tibet people are wrong and evil. Well they pretty much convinced their own people, but not the world. Then they are doing a censorship of human rights, despite their promises to improve the human rights situation before the olympic games. The departments of propaganda and public security and the cyber-police, all conservative bastions, implement censorship with scrupulous care.

Now a news story (from newspaper “Beijing Shibao”) broke that the fireworks at the opening ceremony were faked and played into the live footage. How much longer do you want to be fooled by such ignorant people?

Do not support the China government in this manner anymore. Don’t be blind and believe the hype. You can now demonstrate online against the wrong doing.
