In our previous post we mentioned the different “versions” of Digital Asset Systems. Some systems vendors are offering workstations systems with upgrades to a server edition, but then still having a client. Other vendors offer included solutions with their other offerings, like a CMS.
Then again, some vendors offer systems that store the assets on the filesystem and manage links to those assets in a database.
But to be truly platform independent and 100% secure and safe the only solution to receive the name of a “Enterprise Digital Asset Management System” is to store all assets within a database and also have a system that manages these assets with a Browser. The advantages of a browser based system is that it is truly platform independent (if the vendors develops the system not only for Internet Explorer, as some do!) and that the system can be accessed from everywhere.
